Open Joint Letter against the Delaying and Reopening of the AI Act

July 9, 2025

Open Future has signed an Open Letter along with CDT Europe, European Digital Rights (EDRi), the European Consumer Organisation (BEUC), the European Centre for Not-for-Profit Law (ECNL), and over 50 civil society organizations, experts, and academics expressing concerns about the announced simplification of the AI Act in the forthcoming digital omnibus proposal.

The letter urges the European Commission to refrain from reopening or delaying the implementation of the AI Act through the “Digital Simplification package.” It opposes the proposed “stop the clock” mechanism and the broader deregulation trend that threatens to undermine key accountability mechanisms and hard-won fundamental rights protections.

Instead, we call for prioritizing full implementation and proper enforcement of the AI Act, particularly given current implementation challenges —which we have previously analyzed in pieces like this one or this one. The letter specifically urges the AI Office to establish the Advisory Forum to ensure civil society involvement and emphasizes that any proposed changes should follow transparent processes based on evidence and necessity.
