Data Governance in the Age of Generative AI

December 7, 2023

Open Future partnered with the Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University, which organized the conference on Data Governance in the Age of Generative AI. The hybrid event took place on December 7-8, 2023, in Washington, DC, US.

The conference, curated by Dr. Susan Aaronson and Adam Zable from the Digital Trade and Data Governance Hub at the University, addressed data governance gaps in data management arising from the widespread adoption of large language models for generative AI. The event convened academic researchers, policy experts, and AI developers to explore and discuss these challenges. Alek was one of the speakers at the event.

At Open Future, we have considered data governance as a key aspect of policy debates on AI technologies, starting with our work on AI_Commons. We are also keen to support dialog on these issues between policymakers and experts in Europe and the United States.

During the conference, Alek Tarkowski participated in a panel debate on open and closed large language models. Other sessions concerned sources of data, societal impact, participatory aspects, and the role of governments in data governance for AI.

Recordings of all sessions are available on the event’s YouTube channel.
