Does Europe need a new approach to Internet standards?

Researchers, digital activists, and policymakers joined this online discussion, which explored current and potential European approaches to internet standardization.

The online event focused on a report written by Clément Perarnaud during his Open Future fellowship. The 90-minute event consisted of two main parts:

• the presentation of the report with a short Q&A
• and a one-hour roundtable discussion between Clément and Corinne Cath (University of Delft and University of Cambridge), Mallory Knodel (Center for Democracy and Technology), Olaf Kolkman (Internet Society), and Geoff Huston (Asia Pacific Network Information Centre) – specialists and researchers, currently working on issues related to those explored in the publication.

The discussion took place on February 23 between 11:30 am and 1 pm CET.

The report focuses on unpacking the European Union’s policy approach to Internet standardization. Exploring the concretization of new digital sovereignty-oriented policies, it reflects on the current EU vision for the future of the open internet, along with its inconsistencies. The publication also delineates key recommendations for national/EU policymakers to propose an alternative policy approach conducive to more openness, both at the technical and political levels.
