This unofficial process update documents how the AI Preferences vocabulary under development in the IETF AI Preferences Working Group evolved during the Zürich interim meeting in October 2025. It describes the state of discussions, focusing on how the working group assessed the limitations of the existing draft vocabulary and explored alternative approaches to structuring preferences related to AI training, search, and other deployment-phase uses.
In particular, the update records the shift in discussion from input-based categories toward output-based categories, and the implications this had for how training—and deployment—related controls might be combined. It traces how debates over the relationship between training and deployment, the definition of “search,” and the role of a top-level category led to the emergence of a revised conceptual model, while leaving several key questions unresolved.
