This unofficial process update documents the state of discussions in the IETF AI Preferences Working Groupfollowing the July 2025 design-team meeting in London and the subsequent working-group session at IETF 123 in Madrid. It provides an overview of where the group stands in its work on a common vocabulary for expressing machine-readable preferences related to text and data mining and AI training. The update highlights areas of emerging convergence as well as issues that remained unresolved.
It records how debates around the scope and structure of the vocabulary—most notably the proposed inclusion of a broad inference or AI-use category—shaped the evolution of the draft and led the chairs to prioritize progress toward a first deliverable by narrowing its scope. The update also highlights some of the key trade-offs under discussion.
