Open Call for 2024 Open Future Fellows

Open Future is looking for fellows who will contribute to our work on advancing Digital Public Space and cultivating Digital Commons. For the first time, we are opening the call to creatives.

We are a small, dedicated team of advocates, researchers, and community builders working to make the internet open. We strive to question the status quo and trigger tangible changes within the open movement and European digital policies. This is the first time we are opening the call also to include creatives.

About the Open Call

Our goal as an organization is to drive social change by developing strategies for Europe’s digital future and advocating for them at the policy level.

Along with other civil society organizations working on digital rights in Europe, we have been arguing that governments must ensure the existence of a Digital Public Space — an open and sustainable ecosystem offering alternatives to existing commercial social platforms. Publicly funded, prosocial digital services are necessary for people to enjoy digital rights, such as privacy, self-determination, and freedom of speech. They’re also needed for collaboration, creation, and sharing of resources (data, information, and knowledge) known as Digital Commons. Wikipedia, open-source software, digital cultural resources in the public domain, or academic articles shared under open licenses are great examples of such commons.

For our fellowship, we welcome applications from researchers, practitioners, and creatives — designers, creative technologists, and writers at any stage of their careers whose interests and work overlap with ours. We want our fellows to be our thought partners who bring new perspectives, insights, and skills to the table.

Profile and Responsibilities

Fellows should have previous experience and interest in topics related to our work. We encourage applications from people with various professional backgrounds, such as those in non-profit, policy, research, and creative fields. We also encourage applicants from diverse regions and diverse academic disciplines to apply.

The fellowship will take the form of an individual project centered around Open Futures’ priorities, co-designed by the OFF team and the fellow.

We expect the fellows to have a clear idea of what they would like to accomplish through the fellowship. Based on the fellow’s initial proposal, we will decide on the details of the final project to ensure it connects well with other elements of our work. The result and scope of the fellowship, as well as the level of support from the team members needed to complete the project, can be defined individually.

We are open to research and analytical projects, as well as creative ones: speculative fiction writing, design, and data visualizations, or interactive installation projects that can help us explore and better express some of the issues we are working on.

In addition to working on their projects, fellows would participate in regular calls with the Open Future team. They will benefit from the exposure and engagement with the field, the network, and the (peer) mentoring of team members.

Fellowships typically last 12 months, but we are open to other arrangements. Fellows will be offered a monthly stipend of between 400-750 euros (we adjust salaries, fees, and stipends based on the location of the individual), assuming about 30 hours of fellowship-related engagement per month. Based on individual proposals, we will discuss production-related costs related to a creative fellowship.
